LibGuides Best Practices: Best Practices for Boxes

Tabbed Boxes

Use a tabbed box to include multiple tabs of content in a single box - it's a great way to include a lot of content without taking up a lot of space!

Best practices for Tabbed Boxes

  • Don't use tabs if it will create unnecessary clicks
  • Have only one row of tabs
  • Keep your tab names short

Galley Boxes

Gallery boxes allow you to share a number of images in one box. This type of box is often referred to as a carousel or slideshow.

Best practices for Galley Boxes

  • use sparingly
  • keep all images in a gallery the same size
  • use slow rotation speed
  • add the alt tags
  • if you add descriptions for the images in your gallery, do it for all of them
  • if a gallery box is at top of your guide, you're forcing users to scroll to get to important content
  • Moving elements in a page reduces overall usability
    • Some users have motor skill issues - meaning they can't click on an image before it rotates to the next
    • Low-literacy users may need more time to read information on an image or slide
    • Non-native speakers may need more time to read information as well
  • Gallery boxes increase load time
