Four elements of an APA reference

1. Author
Who is responsible for this work?  Who wrote, edited, or translated the text (sometimes all three)? 
2.

Date

When was this work published?   

  • Give the year only for books and journal articles, example (2017); for magazines and newspapers, give the inverted date (2004 November 30)
3.

Title

What is this work called? 

  • Give the title and subtitle of a source.
  • The words in the title are to be given in sentence case; capitalize only the first in the title and subtitle
4.

Source

Where can I retrieve this work? 

  • For certain reference categories (books, edited book chapters, reports, computer software and mobile apps and data sets) the name of the publisher is provided.
  •  For a source obtained online, a URL or the DOI (Digital Object Identifier) will help readers find it.  There is no location information for print resources (Journals, encyclopedias, books)
