Chicago/Turabian Style

The title is what a work is known by.

  • There are two kinds of capitalization for titles; headline style and sentence style.  In sentence style you capitalize only the first world of the title and subtitle.  In headline style, you capitalize all words in the title with the following exceptions:
    • Do not capitalize articles (a, an, the), EXCEPT if it is the first or last word in the TITLE or SUBTITLE
    • Do not capitalize coordinating conjunctions (and, but, or, nor, for)
    • Do not capitalize prepositions (of, in, at, above, under) unless they are used as adverbs or adjectives (see Turabian 8th p 313 for more information on what to capatilize
  • Give the title and subtitle of a source.

Example of a Newspaper

  • Omit an initial The from the Newspaper title for English-language newspapers
  • The title of the article in a newspaper is put in quotation marks
  • The title of the newspaper is put in italics

Article in a newspaper

  • Altman, L. K. (2009, August 5). "New strain of H.I.V. is discovered." The New York Times, p. A6.

  • The title and subtitle of a book is in italics

Book

  • Note:  Alex Garton,  Exploring cognitive development: The child as problem solver, (Malden, MA: Blackwell, 2005). 45-46

Example of Journal

  • The title of the article in the journal is put in quotation marks
  • The title of a journal is in italics, and every major term is capitalized   Journal of Comparative and Physiological Psychology
  • Do not use abbreviations for the Journal Title

  • Note: James Tenhunen,  "In death, truth lies: Why do patients with sepsis die?" Anesthesia and Analgesia, 108 no 2, (Summer 2009): 1731.
  • Bibliography:  Tenhunen, James.   "In death, truth lies: Why do patients with sepsis die?" Anesthesia and Analgesia, 108 no 2, (Summer 2009): 1731-1744.

  • The title of the article is in quotation marks
  • The title of magazine is put in italics
  • Omit an initial The from the magazine title
  • You do not have to include the page numbers of a magazine article in the Bibliography
