MLA Style: Optional Elements

What are optional elements?

What are optional elements?

"The core elements of the entry--which should generally be included, if they exist--may be accompanied by optional elements, at the writer's discretion." (p 50)

  • Date of original publication--it is placed right after the source's title.
EXAMPLE: Franklin, Charles. The Social History of the Choctaw Nation 1834. 10th ed, Oxford UP, 2017
  • City of Publication--"The traditional practice of citing the city where the publisher of a book  was located usually serves little purpose today." (p 51)
  • Date of Access--This can be important with online resources, since web pages can change over time
EXAMPLE: Leach, Paul R. That man Dawes; the story of a man who has placed his name high among the great of the world in this generation because he ruled his life by common sense. The Reilly & Lee Co., 1930. HathiTrust Digital Library. catalog.hathitrust.org/Record/006578929. Accessed October 18, 2017.
